Think back to your first car – what did it have? My first car had a radio and a cassette player and that is where the luxury items ended. The seats were manual, the windows had an arm crank and it had the old heating system that would either blow hot, cool or just warm air. Newer cars have a few more options built in, but what used to be a luxury item, is now standard and almost required for even base model vehicles.
Nissan dropped off their 2019 Kicks SR for me to test out, and while the curves and beautiful lines sold me instantly, I was shocked at what came inside this affordable package. The Nissan Kicks comes in three different models including the S, SV and the SR. The SR being the most expensive car with the most options, we expected it to be fully loaded, but inside was just the essentials and a few perks you would expect.
Of course you can expect to find air bags and seat belts since they are required by law in all vehicles. But the Kicks SR also has a full infotainment system including GPS, hands free calling, a backup camera and more. The Kicks also has blind spot detection, automatic braking system, rear cross traffic alert and intelligent around view cameras. The car is a bundle of safety wrapped in a cute small package
You can easily sit five in the kicks, and it allows for a large storage space – actually more than we expected to find in the back of that small body. It comfortably fits kids in the back seat, but tall passengers will want to stay up front. The overall design has a couple small flaws, including low arm rests and almost hidden cup holders for the driver. But with comfortable seats and a nice ride, this four cylinder car will get you where you need to go. It took us a few minutes to find the push start on the Kicks since it is down in the center console instead of on the steering column, but you will find that it is relatively easy to get used to as you drive the car more.
While the Kicks SR even seems a bit more basic than other cars that come on the market, but for it’s price point it’s the perfect starter car for a small family, for college students or even young drivers. The sticker shock isn’t there with this car and you’ll love the look of this cute little car as you zip through traffic with it.
Check out our initial thoughts on the Kicks SR:
The 2019 Nissan Kicks SR starts at $20870 and gets an estimated 31 City and 36 Highway, making it the perfect commuter car for small families.
